Former Artsakh Parliament Speaker Stresses Vital Role of Powerful Armenia and Diaspora in Addressing Artsakh Concerns
In a candid statement outside the Artsakh representative office in Armenia, Artur Tovmasyan, the former speaker of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) National Assembly, emphasized the importance of a powerful Armenia and diaspora in keeping the Artsakh issue in focus. Tovmasyan addressed various topics, shedding light on the right of return, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the challenges faced by Artsakh residents.
Tovmasyan stressed the need to voice non-political issues such as the right of return, cultural heritage preservation, and property rights. Referring to the dissolution of the Artsakh National Assembly (NA), he asserted that the NA, currently in exile, will continue to function until May 21, 2025. While legislative activities may be limited, decisions and announcements will still be made to address ongoing concerns.
Discussing the two possible paths forward, Tovmasyan outlined the choice between extreme patriotism and acknowledging current realities. He advocated for a pragmatic approach, considering the well-being of compatriots in Armenia and Artsakh to avoid harm.
Touching upon the matter of Armenian POWs in Azerbaijan, Tovmasyan highlighted the harsh legal measures faced by detainees, labeled as 'terrorists' and 'separatists' in Azerbaijan's legal framework. Despite these challenges, he pointed out the consistent presence of OSCE co-chairing countries in Artsakh and international observers during elections, emphasizing their positive assessments of the democratic processes.
Regarding the return of Artsakh Armenians to their homeland, Tovmasyan stressed the necessity of international guarantees due to prevailing security issues. He firmly stated that the people of Artsakh cannot return as citizens of Azerbaijan, deeming it impossible.
