Armenia Elected to UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the First Time

Armenia has been elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the first time — this an important moment for the country and its work in protecting culture. The vote was held on November 24 in Paris during the 25th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention. The Armenian Foreign Ministry shared the results in a public statement.

During the elections for open seats on the committee, Armenia received the strongest result among all candidates, with 105 out of 161 possible votes. Officials said this outcome “reflects the high level of confidence of the international community in Armenia’s efforts in the field of cultural heritage preservation.”

Armenia’s new position in the committee carries major responsibility. The statement noted that by joining the World Heritage Committee, the country is showing its readiness to take part in global work to protect and restore cultural and natural heritage. Armenia also aims to support the main principles of the World Heritage Convention through its new role.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is made up of 21 countries elected for fixed terms. It is responsible for identifying new World Heritage Sites, monitoring the condition of existing ones, and guiding the international response when a protected site faces danger. The committee also decides how to use the World Heritage Fund, which supports preservation projects in different regions. Its work shapes global cultural and environmental policy and helps ensure that the most valuable places on Earth are protected for future generations.
