Armenia Files EAEU Complaint Over Russian Trade Barriers

Armenia has formally raised concerns within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) over trade barriers affecting Armenian goods, saying the restrictions run counter to the bloc’s rules and should be addressed through its existing legal mechanisms.

Deputy Economy Minister Tigran Gasparyan said Armenia has filed a complaint with the EAEU and expects the organization to take steps to remove the barriers.

“We have filed a complaint, and we hope — and are confident — that the mechanisms should work so that the barriers are removed,” Gasparyan told reporters.

He said Armenia is relying not only on direct contacts with Russia but also on its rights as a full EAEU member, arguing that the bloc has specific procedures designed to address restrictions within its common market.

Gasparyan also said the situation underscores Armenia’s need to diversify its export markets. He said the government is seeking to increase production of higher-value goods and improve quality standards so Armenian products can compete in more lucrative international markets.

The dispute comes during growing strains in Armenia-Russia relations and renewed questions over Yerevan’s economic ties with Moscow as Armenia moves closer to the European Union.

According to the original report, Russia has imposed a series of restrictions on Armenian goods entering its market or traveling through Russian territory to other EAEU countries.

The measures followed high-level European gatherings in Yerevan, including meetings connected to the European Political Community and the European Union, as well as a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Russian officials have since publicly pressed Armenia to clarify how its push for closer integration with the EU can coexist with continued membership in the Russian-led EAEU.
