Armenia’s Ancient Manuscripts Go Global: Diaspora Armenians to Gain Free Access to Matenadaran’s Educational Content

The Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran, one of the world's most significant repositories of ancient manuscripts, has signed a cooperation memorandum with the educational and cultural platform Mtqaran Academy in order to make Armenia’s scholarly and cultural heritage more accessible to modern audiences.

The Armenian Report was invited to attend the signing ceremony, which brought together representatives of both institutions to outline plans for a wide-ranging collaboration focused on education, science communication, and cultural preservation.

Under the agreement, Matenadaran and Mtqaran Academy will jointly develop programs designed to promote Armenia’s written heritage, highlight the scientific research conducted at Matenadaran, and create educational and popular science content for the public. The partnership will also support public lectures, discussions, interviews, documentaries, podcasts, educational broadcasts, and digital media projects.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and public engagement by using contemporary communication tools to present centuries of Armenian knowledge to audiences in Armenia and across the diaspora.

Speaking to The Armenian Report, Mtqaran Academy founder Aramo Unanyan said the partnership represents an important opportunity to share the vast knowledge preserved within Matenadaran with wider audiences while maintaining academic integrity.

“This memorandum will give us the opportunity to popularize the knowledge preserved at Matenadaran through new methods,” Unanyan said. “It is very important that we are able to package and present this knowledge in a way that is engaging for audiences while, most importantly, preserving the integrity of the content. We approach this responsibility with the utmost seriousness and hope that we will be able to present and promote the knowledge housed in this building in a proper and responsible manner.”

Addressing Armenians living abroad, Unanyan emphasized that the partnership will provide free access to educational content featuring some of Armenia’s leading scholars and researchers.

“Dear members of our Diaspora, you will have the opportunity to receive free knowledge from some of Armenia’s leading experts—people who work at Matenadaran and have dedicated their lives to studying various fields,” he said. “On our YouTube channel, you will find numerous lectures about Armenian manuscripts, culture, and history.”

The collaboration reflects a broader effort to ensure that Armenia’s rich intellectual and cultural legacy is preserved, digitized, and shared with new generations through accessible and innovative educational platforms.
