Olympic silver medalist and two-time world and European champion Varazdat Lalayan delivered a dominant performance at the European Weightlifting Championships held in Batumi, securing another major title for Armenia.
Competing in the +110 kg weight category, Lalayan lifted a combined total of 451 kg to win the gold medal. His result came from 210 kg in the snatch and 241 kg in the clean and jerk. This victory marks the third European Championship title of his career.
Lalayan entered the competition later than the rest of the athletes, beginning his attempts after all other competitors had completed theirs. In the snatch event, he successfully lifted 200 kg on his first attempt and then improved to 210 kg on his second. He chose not to take a third attempt. His result in this discipline was 18 kg higher than that of the second-place finisher, Danil Vagatsiev.
In the clean and jerk, Lalayan lifted 241 kg to secure his overall victory. He then attempted to set a new record by lifting 253 kg on his second attempt, but the effort was unsuccessful. He made another attempt at the same weight but was again unable to complete the lift.
The competition in the +110 kg category was also attended by three-time Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze, who watched the event from the arena.
