Armenia Sends Eight-Member Team to World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan

Armenia is competing in sambo and strongman at the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan, returning to the international competition for the second time with an eight-member delegation.

The Armenian team includes five athletes, two coaches and delegation head Sergey Abrahamyan, he told The Armenian Report.

Three athletes and one coach make up Armenia’s sambo team, while two athletes and one coach are representing the country in strongman.

Armenia’s first competition comes Wednesday, Sept. 2, when the strongman events begin at Kyrchyn Gorge. The official World Nomad Games schedule lists strongman among the traditional strength sports being contested there.

The Armenian sambo team is scheduled to compete Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Gazprom Sports and Recreation Complex in Cholpon-Ata, according to the Games’ official program. 

Abrahamyan said this is Armenia’s second time participating in the World Nomad Games.

The Games opened Aug. 31 in Bishkek before competition shifted to venues around the Issyk-Kul region. The program brings together traditional wrestling, strength sports, horseback competitions and other games rooted in the sporting traditions of participating countries.

Competition continues through Sept. 6.
