Armenia to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags, Cups, Utensils Starting in 2027

Armenia will prohibit businesses from selling or providing many common single-use plastic products starting Jan. 1, 2027, expanding restrictions to items ranging from shopping bags and food containers to cups, straws and plastic utensils.

The new rules will apply to retail stores, restaurants and other food service businesses, mobile vendors, street sellers, fairs and trade exhibitions, according to Armenia’s Market Surveillance Inspection Body.

Businesses will no longer be allowed to sell or provide plastic bags and sacks covered by the legislation. The ban also includes disposable plastic and foam food containers, plates, cups and cup lids, as well as spoons, forks, knives, drinking straws and stirring sticks.

Polyethylene bags and sacks thicker than 50 microns will also fall under the restrictions.

The law includes several exceptions. Polyethylene bags used for bulk packaging will remain permitted, as will garbage bags made from recycled materials and plastic containers with lids intended for bulk goods.

The restrictions stem from amendments to Armenia’s laws on trade and services and market supervision, along with changes to the country’s Code of Administrative Offenses.

Businesses that fail to comply will face administrative penalties.

The Market Surveillance Inspection Body has urged retailers, restaurants and other affected businesses to prepare for the changes before they take effect Jan. 1.
