Armenian Catholicos Aram I Meets Pope Leo XIV at Vatican, Raises Artsakh Return, Armenian POWs and Christian Unity

On the morning of May 18, 2026, a private meeting took place at the Vatican between Aram I and Pope Leo XIV, where the two religious leaders discussed a wide range of issues concerning the global Christian community, regional conflicts, and humanitarian concerns.
According to the Armenian Catholicosate, the meeting focused first on several major topics related to Christian unity and cooperation. Aram I raised the issue of establishing a unified date for Easter among Christian churches, creating a common day of remembrance for all Christian martyrs, and convening a Third Vatican Council. He emphasized what he described as the urgent importance of these matters for Christian life around the world.

The Catholicos also addressed the situation surrounding Artsakh and the Armenians displaced from the region. During the discussion, he stressed the right of the Armenians of Artsakh to return to their homeland under international guarantees. He also highlighted the importance of protecting Armenian churches and historical monuments in accordance with international law.

Another major issue discussed during the meeting was the continued detention of former Artsakh officials and leaders currently being held in Baku. Aram I underlined the urgent need for their release.
The conversation also turned to the situation in Lebanon. The Catholicos spoke about the importance of preserving the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and ensuring the authority of the government across all Lebanese territories. He additionally stressed the importance of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and respect for the existing ceasefire arrangements.

The two religious leaders also discussed the broader role of inter-church relations and ecumenical cooperation. Aram I emphasized that alongside theological dialogue, moral and ethical issues should receive greater attention and priority within inter-church movements and discussions.
According to the statement, Pope Leo XIV expressed understanding and support regarding the issues raised during the meeting. The Pope also shared his own views and explanations on the topics discussed.
Following the formal meeting, the Catholicos and the Pope reportedly continued their discussion privately, exchanging further thoughts and concerns regarding the issues raised as well as other matters affecting the Christian world and the broader international situation.
