Armenian Cemetery in Istanbul Vandalized, Six Graves Damaged

An Armenian cemetery in Istanbul was vandalized overnight after an intruder climbed over its perimeter wall, damaging six graves and a memorial fountain, the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople said.

The attack, which occurred during the night of July 7-8, has left members of the city’s Armenian community deeply distressed, especially families whose relatives are buried at the cemetery.

Community representatives immediately notified Turkish law enforcement authorities. An investigation is now underway to identify the suspect and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

In a statement, the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople condemned the vandalism as a desecration of a sacred place and an insult to the memory of the deceased. The Patriarchate called the attack reprehensible and urged that those responsible be held accountable.

The church also expressed appreciation to the security personnel investigating the case, praising their professionalism and commitment. It said it hopes the perpetrator will soon be brought before the courts.

The Armenian Patriarchate said it is closely following the investigation as authorities continue their efforts to solve the case.
