Armenian History and Culture to Be Taught in Belgium as Global Studies Programs Expand

Students at Belgium’s Ghent University will have the opportunity to study Armenian history and culture under a new agreement with the Armenian government, part of a wider effort to expand Armenian studies at universities around the world.

The agreement was signed remotely by Armenia’s ambassador to Belgium, Tigran Balayan, and Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter, Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports announced.

The partnership will bring Armenian history and culture into the university’s academic offerings through courses, seminars and workshops. It will also support the development of teaching materials for existing programs and public events aimed at introducing Armenian heritage to a wider audience.

Ghent University joins a growing international network of institutions working with Armenia to promote the study of its language, literature, history and culture.

The Armenian government currently funds Armenian studies programs and research at 14 universities in 11 countries, including Sapienza University of Rome, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the University of Salzburg in Austria, Complutense University of Madrid, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland and Cairo University in Egypt.

The Education Ministry said expanding these partnerships remains a priority, with a focus on strengthening academic ties and making Armenian studies more accessible to students and researchers outside Armenia.
