Armenian master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian has been awarded the Legion of Honor, France's highest civilian distinction, joining hundreds of people recognized this year for their contributions to public life, culture, science and business.
Kurkdjian was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor as part of France's 2026 civilian honors list, approved by President Emmanuel Macron. The annual awards recognize individuals whose work has made a lasting impact across a wide range of fields.
One of the world's most influential fragrance creators, Kurkdjian has built an international reputation through decades of innovation in perfumery. Born in Paris to an Armenian family, he co-founded Maison Francis Kurkdjian before becoming perfume creative director at Dior. His fragrances have helped shape the modern luxury perfume industry, earning him global recognition as one of the leading perfumers of his generation.
This year's list honors 619 recipients, including 518 Knights, 79 Officers, 16 Commanders, four Grand Officers and two Grand Cross recipients.
Kurkdjian was recognized alongside several prominent figures from France's cultural community. The new Knights include writer Philippe Besson, actresses Rachida Brakni and Clémentine Célarié, filmmakers Xavier Giannoli and Rebecca Zlotowski, artist Eva Jospin, fashion designer Paloma Picasso and actress Natalie Portman, who was honored as a foreign national living in France.
Among the highest distinctions awarded this year, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde was elevated to Grand Officer. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Serge Haroche and historian Michelle Perrot received the Grand Cross, the order's highest rank. Actor Pierre Arditi and Arles Mayor and former France Télévisions CEO Patrick de Carolis were named Commanders.
Former French ministers Hervé Gaymard, Olivier Klein, Jean Leonetti, Gérard Longuet, Patrick Mignola and Patrice Vergriete were also appointed Knights. Former France international footballer Marius Trésor was promoted to the rank of Officer.
