Artsakh Flag Displayed at 2026 FIFA World Cup Match Between Argentina and Austria

The flag of Artsakh was displayed by spectators at AT&T Stadium in Dallas during Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on June 22, a match that secured Argentina’s place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Images of the flag circulating on social media drew attention from Armenian communities around the world, many of whom continue to advocate for the rights of Armenians forcibly displaced from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) following Azerbaijan’s 2023 military offensive that led to the mass displacement of the region’s Armenian population.

Speaking to A24, Gago Ananyan, a member of the Representative Group of Armenian Migrants in Armenia (ARAMA), described the banner as “the flag of Artsakh, illegally occupied by Azerbaijan.” He said the display was intended to keep international attention focused on the issue and the aspirations of displaced Armenians.

“At any moment, the Armenian people will return to their historical lands,” Ananyan said.

The appearance of the Artsakh flag at one of the world’s most-watched sporting events shows how the issue continues to resonate across the Armenian diaspora. For many Armenians, the display served as a symbolic reminder of their connection to Artsakh and ongoing calls for the protection of cultural heritage, human rights, and the right of displaced people to return to their homes.
