Azerbaijan Fires on Construction Crew in Armenia’s Syunik Region, Defense Ministry Reports

On Monday at around 1:10pm local time, Azerbaijani military forces opened fire on an excavator working near Verishen village in Armenia’s Syunik Province. The Ministry of Defense of Armenia reported that the excavator was carrying out construction on inter-position roads about 4,500 meters northeast of Verishen when it came under attack. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense called on Azerbaijan to investigate the incident and provide a public explanation for this unprovoked attack. The shelling of a civilian construction vehicle is another example of Azerbaijan’s ongoing aggression against Armenia.

This incident is a part of a concerning pattern of Azerbaijan’s hostile actions. For years, Azerbaijan has been carrying out violent attacks against Armenian territories and civilians, ignoring international calls. Azerbaijan has shelled towns, destroyed homes and infrastructure, and ethnically erased the indigenous Armenian population from their ancestral homeland. Azerbaijan’s occupation of Artsakh is the result of a brutal campaign of violence aimed at erasing the Armenian presence from the region.

The attack near Verishen village is yet another clear example of Azerbaijan’s continuous hostility. While Armenia focuses on rebuilding and securing its border regions, Azerbaijan continues to provoke, threaten, and destabilize with deliberate acts of aggression.

The international community can no longer remain silent or indifferent. It’s time to hold Azerbaijan accountable and to stand with Armenia against further invasion, aggression, and the threat to its people and heritage.
