Flowers Cover Graves at Yerablur as Armenia Commemorates Six Years Since the Start of the 2020 Artsakh War

Flowers covered graves at Yerablur Military Pantheon on Sunday as families commemorated six years since the start of the 2020 war in Artsakh.

Parents, widows, children and fellow servicemen came to remember those killed during 44 days of fighting that began on September 27, 2020.

Some relatives sat quietly beside the graves. Others brought fresh flowers, lit incense or cleaned headstones bearing the photographs of young men who never returned home.

For many families, Yerablur has become inseparable from the war. Rows of graves at the military cemetery hold servicemen killed during the fighting, a lasting reminder of the scale of Armenia’s losses.

According to figures released this month by Armenia’s Investigative Committee, 3,833 people on the Armenian side were killed in the war, including 3,755 servicemen and 78 civilians. Another 191 people — 172 servicemen and 19 civilians — remain missing.

The fighting ended on November 9, 2020, with a Russian-brokered statement signed by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. Six years later, families continue to return to Yerablur on September 27 to remember the lives behind those numbers.
