Russia Warns Armenia-USA Military Exercises Will Cause Regret

military exercises between Armenia and the United States

The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the upcoming joint military exercises between Armenia and the United States. These exercises, known as Eagle Partner, are set to take place for the second time from July 15 to 24 in Armenia.

Russian officials believe these drills are concerning, especially given Armenia's recent decision to pause its activities within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and its public criticisms of the group.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, raised the alarm during a recent briefing. She stated that, despite claims of peaceful intentions, the true goal of these exercises is clear: to establish a foothold for Western geopolitical interests in the region. Zakharova warned that the presence of American forces in the Caucasus could increase tensions and create new divisions within the area. She emphasized that this analysis is based on real data, not mere speculation.

Zakharova accused Western countries of aggressively trying to pull Armenia into various formats of cooperation that are primarily aimed against Russia and Iran. She argued that by engaging in these military drills, Armenia is adopting NATO standards for its armed forces. This shift is reforming Armenia’s entire security system and granting Western nations greater influence over its domestic and foreign policies.

The Russian spokesperson highlighted that these developments undermine the existing mechanisms for cooperation in the region. She reminded everyone of Russia’s commitment to its allies, stating that Russia remains dedicated to ensuring Armenia's security. However, the ongoing actions of the Armenian government threaten the future of their relationship.

Zakharova reiterated that the ongoing Armenian participation in Western-led military activities risks altering the balance in the South Caucasus. She stressed that these maneuvers not only jeopardize stability but could also lead to unpredictable outcomes in an already complex environment.

The Eagle Partner 2024 exercises are part of a broader strategy by the U.S. and its allies to strengthen military ties with Armenia. These joint drills are seen as a significant step in increasing Western presence and influence in the South Caucasus region. While Armenia seeks to diversify its security partnerships, Russia views these moves with growing concern.

Relations between Armenia and Russia have been tested in recent years, particularly following conflicts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Armenia's reliance on Russian support has been crucial, yet the shifting dynamics in regional politics have prompted Yerevan to explore closer ties with the West.

The CSTO, which includes Russia, has faced criticism from Armenia for its perceived lack of support during times of crisis. This dissatisfaction has led Armenia to seek alternative security partnerships, further straining ties with Moscow.
