In a thrilling match at Melbourne Park, Russian-Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan pulled off a remarkable upset against Maria Sakkari, the No. 8 seed, with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The 21-year-old, ranked No. 74, displayed exceptional skill, securing her spot in the third round where she is set to face Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.

Avanesyan's journey in the Australian Open has been nothing short of impressive. In the previous round, she battled past Chinese player Zhuoxuan Bai in a three-set encounter (4-6, 7-5, 6-2). Now, she gears up for another challenging match against Kostyuk.

Elina Avanesyan, with a career-high WTA ranking of 62 in singles, has been steadily making her mark in the tennis world. Her notable achievements include winning five singles and nine doubles titles at ITF Circuit tournaments.

Avanesyan continued her success at the German Open, making her WTA 500 debut and defeating eighth seed Daria Kasatkina.

As of November 6, 2023, she concluded the year ranked No. 75, setting the stage for a promising 2024. Avanesyan's Australian Open debut in 2024 has been stellar, recording wins over Zhuoxuan Bai and securing her first top-10 victory against Maria Sakkari.
