Trump Congratulates Pashinyan Before Armenia Certifies Final Election Results

Three days after Armenia's parliamentary elections, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly congratulated Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on securing re-election, even though the country's final election results have not yet been officially certified.

In a statement, Trump praised Pashinyan's victory and expressed confidence in Armenia's future under his leadership.

“Congratulations to Nikol Pashinyan for his decisive victory in Armenia’s National Elections. I was very proud to have endorsed him for re-election, and have no doubt that, with him as the leader of the beautiful country of Armenia, it will attain levels of greatness and success beyond everyone’s wildest expectations!” Trump wrote.

Trump's post is one of the highest-profile international reactions to Armenia's June 7 parliamentary elections, which preliminary results indicate were won by Pashinyan's ruling Civil Contract party.

Armenia's Central Election Commission is continuing the process of reviewing recount requests and certifying the final results. Several opposition parties have challenged aspects of the vote and called for recounts in a number of polling stations, arguing that irregularities affected the outcome.

Trump had openly backed Pashinyan during the election campaign, offering his full support and portraying the Armenian prime minister as a key partner in advancing regional stability and economic development.

One factor behind Trump's support for Pashinyan is the strategic transportation and economic initiative known as the TRIPP corridor, a U.S.-backed project designed to connect Armenia, Azerbaijan and the broader region through expanded trade and transit links.

The framework emerged from U.S.-brokered peace efforts that culminated in the signing of the Washington Declaration on Aug. 8, 2025, where Armenia and Azerbaijan committed to pursuing a comprehensive peace agreement. The project envisions transforming Armenia into a key transit hub linking Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia while creating new opportunities for trade, investment and infrastructure development.

Trump has repeatedly praised the initiative as a potential economic engine for the region and has presented it as one of the signature foreign policy achievements of his administration. Pashinyan has been among the strongest supporters of the project, arguing that improved regional connectivity could help reduce Armenia's isolation, attract foreign investment and strengthen the country's long-term economic prospects.

For the Trump administration, Pashinyan's re-election provides continuity for a peace and economic agenda that Washington has invested significant diplomatic capital in advancing. U.S. officials have repeatedly emphasized that the success of the TRIPP corridor depends on sustained cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, making political stability in Yerevan an important factor in the project's future development.

The U.S. president's swift congratulatory message stands in contrast to Russia's response. Moscow has not yet formally congratulated Pashinyan, with Russian officials stating that they are waiting for Armenia's final official election results before issuing a response.

The differing reactions shows the geopolitical significance of Armenia's election as the South Caucasus nation continues to balance its traditional ties with Russia while deepening relations with the United States and other Western partners.

Trump's early endorsement and subsequent congratulatory message underscore the growing importance Washington places on Armenia's role in regional connectivity initiatives and ongoing peace efforts with Azerbaijan. With the future of the TRIPP corridor closely tied to stability in the South Caucasus, Pashinyan's re-election provides continuity for a project that has become a central component of U.S. engagement in the region.
