Trump Quotes Pashinyan and Aliyev in Marathon U.N. Address

U.S. President Donald Trump pointed to Armenia and Azerbaijan as one of eight conflicts he says he has helped settle, invoking praise from Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Trump used the opening day of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual debate to make the case for his record as a peacemaker, saying his administration had helped resolve conflicts that in some cases had lasted for decades.

“Since I took office, it has been my great honor to settle eight wars,” Trump said.

He credited his relationships with foreign leaders, as well as U.S. trade policy, tariffs and the threat of tariffs, with helping bring countries to agreements.

Trump listed Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, and Armenia and Azerbaijan among the conflicts he said he helped settle. He also cited the war in Gaza and the return of hostages, both living and dead.

Turning to Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump highlighted statements previously made by Pashinyan and Aliyev about his involvement in negotiations between the two South Caucasus countries.

“The President of Azerbaijan said President Trump in six months did a miracle,” Trump said, quoting Aliyev. “It was an absolute miracle that nobody thought could be done.”

Trump then cited Pashinyan’s remarks following the U.S.-brokered breakthrough between Yerevan and Baku.

“The Prime Minister of Armenia said this breakthrough would simply not have been possible without President Trump’s personal engagement and his resolute commitment to peace,” Trump said.

Pashinyan made the statement at the White House on Aug. 8, 2025, when he and Aliyev met with Trump and reached a major milestone in negotiations aimed at ending decades of conflict. Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed the text of a peace agreement during the Washington summit. (Roll Call⁠)

Trump also cited Pakistan’s prime minister as crediting him with saving 30 million lives and referred to praise from Cambodia’s leadership for his role in conflict resolution.

The U.S. president framed the agreements as evidence that direct diplomacy and economic leverage could succeed where years of negotiations had failed.

Trump’s remarks came as world leaders gathered in New York for the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly. Pashinyan is also attending the session and is scheduled to address the high-level gathering during his Sept. 22-25 visit to New York.
