U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Armenia in Various Sectors
The meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and James O'Brien, Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the US Department of State, took a major step forward as it continued in an expanded format in Yerevan. This meeting shows the deepening relationship between Armenia and the United States, focusing on both the bilateral agenda and regional security issues.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia reported on the discussions covering a wide array of topics, including the critical issue of regional security. The meeting also addressed the strategic Armenia road from Nakhijevan to Azerbaijan, indicating the comprehensive nature of the talks.
James O'Brien reaffirmed the United States' commitment to supporting Armenia in various sectors. In his opening remarks at the meeting of the Armenia-US Strategic Dialogue, he emphasized the US's role in aiding Armenia's reforms and integration into the global economy. He praised the Armenian government's efforts under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which aim to create a more democratic environment and economic development.
O'Brien pointed out the notable economic progress in Armenia and the broader region. He mentioned the recent meeting in Brussels on April 5, where both nations discussed expanding mutual economic cooperation to boost Armenia's participation in the global economy. A key outcome of these discussions was the agreement on the exchange of information in the customs sector, aimed at facilitating trade and business.
The US official highlighted the importance of Armenia's democratic aspirations, reflecting the will of its people. He commended the Armenian government's steps to combat corruption and empower citizens to express their opinions freely. The US is actively supporting these initiatives, working closely with both government and local entities to ensure significant progress.
The three pillars of Armenia's development—security, prosperity, and democracy—remain at the forefront of US assistance. O'Brien noted that the US is dedicated to building lasting peace in the region, which includes expanding economic opportunities from Central Asia to the Mediterranean Sea. The potential for lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan was also discussed, with the US ready to contribute to these efforts.
The meeting concluded with the signing of the "Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the US Government on mutual assistance of their customs authorities." This significant document was signed by Rustam Badasyan, President of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia, and Kristina Kvien, US Ambassador to Armenia, in the presence of Foreign Minister Mirzoyan and Assistant Secretary O’Brien.
This agreement marks a step in enhancing trade and business relations between the two countries, showcasing the strong and growing partnership between Armenia and the United States.
