Wizz Air has announced the opening of its first base in Armenia at Zvartnots International Airport. Starting in October 2025, the airline will introduce direct flights to eight new destinations in Europe. This expansion is a turning point for Armenia’s connectivity with the rest of Europe and brings promising economic benefits.
Wizz Air, Armenia’s largest airline, aims to strengthen its position as a leading carrier in the region. The new base at Zvartnots Airport will host two modern Airbus A321neo aircraft, known for their fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. These planes not only reduce fuel consumption by 20% but also decrease noise by 50%. This investment aligns with global efforts to make aviation more sustainable.
Starting from October, Armenian travelers can fly directly from Yerevan to eight European cities: Bari, Bucharest, Hamburg, Naples, Nice, Memmingen, Paphos, and Prague. This initiative will make air travel more accessible and affordable, with ticket prices starting as low as €29.99. Tickets are now available on Wizz Air’s website and mobile app.
This development shows a growing trend in Armenia’s aviation industry, which has been evolving rapidly in recent years. Since Wizz Air launched its operations in Armenia in 2020, it has transported over 2.2 million passengers, contributing significantly to the country’s tourism and aviation sectors. With the new base, the airline expects to increase the number of direct flights from Yerevan, boosting passenger traffic and providing nearly 1.2 million low-cost seats annually.
Beyond improving connectivity, Wizz Air’s expansion brings substantial economic advantages. The new base will create around 100 direct jobs, including flight attendants and flight crew positions. Additionally, the increase in passenger traffic is projected to generate approximately 800 jobs in related sectors, such as tourism and ground services.
During the press conference in Yerevan, Wizz Air Hungary CEO Roland Tischner highlighted the airline’s commitment to the Armenian market. He emphasized that establishing the base is part of Wizz Air’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the region while supporting local employment and tourism.
Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Armen Simonyan, also praised the move. He stressed that attracting international airlines not only broadens Armenia’s flight network but also fosters the introduction of new business practices. According to Simonyan, such initiatives will enable local carriers to enhance their competitiveness by learning from global industry standards.
Wizz Air’s expansion at Zvartnots Airport represents more than just new routes. It’s a statement about Armenia’s growing role as a travel hub and a destination of choice. As the airline continues to expand its low-cost model, Armenians can look forward to increased travel opportunities and a more interconnected future.
