Yerevan to Honor Charles Aznavour with Statue Depicting "La Bohème" for Centennial Celebration

Yerevan is set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of legendary singer Charles Aznavour with the installation of a statue dedicated to his iconic song, "La Bohème." The unveiling of this tribute will take place on May 22, 2025, marking a huge event in the year-long commemoration of Aznavour's remarkable life and career.

Charles Aznavour, born on May 22, 1924, in Paris, is celebrated for his enduring contributions to music and film. His song "La Bohème," first recorded in 1965 and released as a hit in 1966, has become a beloved classic. The statue planned for Yerevan will depict Aznavour performing this signature song, capturing the essence of his artistic legacy.

The statue, created by Armenian sculptor Davit Mianasyan, was selected through an open competition organized by the Yerevan Municipality. This competition attracted over 60 applications and more than 100 models. Mianasyan's work won the approval of the professional jury, receiving 9 votes and surpassing other submissions. Armenak Vardanyan's sculpture secured second place and will receive a monetary award as recognition.

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "This was one of the important works dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Charles Aznavour. I am sure that this sculpture will truly reflect the energy that Aznavour conveyed to us during his lifetime."

The design of the statue has a unique and meaningful concept. Nicolas Aznavour, Charles Aznavour's son, said that the statue is intended to be visible from all sides, symbolizing how his father was surrounded by an appreciative audience. "I see that each of them put their heart and soul into the projects," Nicolas Aznavour said of the competition participants. "The main detail we emphasized was that the monument should be visible from all sides. This sculpture is also based on a special idea that my father is not alone, but is surrounded by an audience applauding him."

The statue will be installed in France Square, a location chosen to honor Aznavour’s deep connection to French culture and his global influence. This project is a key highlight of the events planned for the centennial celebration of Aznavour's birth, and his lasting impact on both Armenian and international audiences.

Charles Aznavour’s contributions to music and film have left an indelible mark on the world. The planned statue in Yerevan not only celebrates his legendary song "La Bohème" but also serves as a testament to his artistic and cultural influence. The statue’s unveiling will be a fitting tribute to a man who touched the hearts of millions with his music and performances.
