Armenia and Georgia have been selected to host the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup — a historic moment for football in the region. The decision was announced during a FIFA Executive Committee meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. This will be the first time that a major FIFA tournament of this scale is organized jointly by Armenia and Georgia.
The tournament is one of the most important international competitions for young football players, bringing together the best national teams under the age of 20 from around the world. Hosting such an event places both countries on the global football map and is expected to bring attention not only to their sports development but also to their infrastructure and ability to organize large international events.
According to the Armenia Football Federation, the decision reflects strong confidence from the international football community. “This is an unprecedented achievement for Armenian football. For the first time, our country will host a major international football tournament of this scale, reflecting the great trust of the international football community,” the federation said in its statement.

The federation also described the tournament as an important opportunity for fans and young athletes. “This is an invaluable gift to Armenian fans, supporters of Armenian football, and, of course, to young footballers, who will have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a World Cup on home soil and dream of great victories.”
Officials believe the event will inspire a new generation of players and strengthen interest in football across the country. The chance to host matches at home is expected to create strong public engagement and encourage youth participation in sports.
The statement also highlighted the sense of national pride connected to the announcement. “This is a victory for all of us. Welcome to the World Championship, welcome to Armenia and Georgia. Let us prepare together to host the world’s strongest youth teams.”
The joint hosting with Georgia shows growing regional cooperation in sports and event organization. Both countries will need to prepare stadiums, training facilities, transportation systems, and other infrastructure in the coming years to meet FIFA standards.
Meanwhile, the next edition of the tournament will take place earlier, with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan set to host the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The upcoming tournaments in the region highlight an increasing role for countries from this part of the world in international football.
The 2029 tournament is expected to bring teams, fans, and media from around the globe to Armenia and Georgia, creating both sporting and economic opportunities while also strengthening the countries’ presence in the international sports community.
