Armenia Named Most Peaceful Country in the South Caucasus, Ranking Ahead of Georgia and Azerbaijan in Global Peace Index

Armenia has emerged as the most peaceful country in the South Caucasus, climbing seven places to rank 51st out of 163 nations in the 2026 Global Peace Index published by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

With a score of 1.825, Armenia was classified among countries with a “high” level of peace, a designation it has maintained since 2025. In the regional rankings, Armenia outperformed its neighbors, with Azerbaijan placing 110th and Georgia 94th. Iceland retained its position as the world’s most peaceful country, while Russia ranked last in the index.

According to the report, Armenia’s improved standing shows progress in the normalization of relations with Azerbaijan following the signing of a peace agreement in the United States in August 2025. The report highlights subsequent confidence-building measures, including border delimitation efforts, energy cooperation, and plans for new regional transport links.

Armenia’s overall peace score improved by 4% compared to the previous year. The strongest gains were recorded in the “Societal Safety and Security” category, which improved by 9.3%. The index noted a sharp decline in violent demonstrations, with that indicator improving by 42.9%, while the political terror indicator improved by 33.3%.

The country also recorded a 1.8% improvement in the category measuring ongoing domestic and international conflict, underscoring broader gains in stability during a period of significant diplomatic engagement in the South Caucasus.

The latest ranking shows Armenia’s growing role as a stabilizing force in a region that has historically faced political tensions and security challenges.
