Armenian wrestler Levik Mikayelyan has won the gold medal at the European Under-23 Freestyle Wrestling Championship, defeating Azerbaijan’s Jeyhun Allahverdiyev in the final. The Armenian athlete secured a narrow 2–1 victory, earning the top place on the podium and bringing an important success for Armenia’s wrestling team.
The championship took place in Serbia, where young wrestlers from across Europe competed for continental titles. Mikayelyan competed in the 61 kg weight category and showed strong performances throughout the tournament.
Before reaching the final, Mikayelyan delivered an impressive victory in the semifinal, where he faced Turkish wrestler Tolga Ozbek. The Armenian wrestler won the match convincingly with a 10–3 score, demonstrating control and confidence on the mat.
The gold medal match against Azerbaijan’s Jeyhun Allahverdiyev was closely contested. Both wrestlers fought carefully, but Mikayelyan managed to maintain a small advantage and secured the 2–1 win. The result placed him at the top of the podium and confirmed his position as one of the leading young freestyle wrestlers in Europe.
This was not the first time Mikayelyan defeated Allahverdiyev in a final. The Armenian wrestler had also won against the Azerbaijani competitor in the previous year’s final, repeating his success again at this year’s championship.
The Armenian national team also celebrated another medal during the tournament. 19-year-old Arman Harutyunyan, competing in the 57 kg category, secured the first medal for Armenia in the competition.
In the decisive match for the bronze medal, Harutyunyan dominated Belarusian wrestler Artyom Pavlyuchenko, winning 10–0 by technical superiority. The victory ended the match early and guaranteed Harutyunyan a place on the podium.
