Armenia is becoming an increasingly important player in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), with strong backing from both China and Iran. During a seminar on Thursday, Chinese and Iranian diplomats emphasized Armenia’s role in the SCO’s expansion and the benefits of regional cooperation.
China’s chargé d'affaires in Armenia, Chen Ming, reaffirmed that Armenia is a vital partner in strengthening and expanding the SCO. He spoke about the deepening ties between the two countries, calling Armenia and China “good friends and reliable partners.” Their cooperation, he noted, is built on mutual respect and shared benefits.

Chen pointed out that both nations support each other in key areas of interest and actively collaborate within global organizations like the SCO and the United Nations. He also stressed the importance of multilateralism, stating that Armenia and China work together not only for their own benefit but for the progress of the entire developing world.
Chen recalled that Armenia was granted the status of a dialogue partner at the SCO summit in Ufa, Russia, in 2015. The following year, it officially became a dialogue partner within the organization. Since then, Armenia has actively taken part in various SCO events, reflecting its commitment to regional cooperation.

As China holds the chairmanship of the organization, Chen welcomed Armenia’s involvement in practical projects within the SCO framework. He emphasized China’s willingness to work with Armenia to further develop the organization, contribute to regional stability, and promote shared prosperity.
Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, echoed similar sentiments, stating that Armenia’s membership in the SCO will create new opportunities for cooperation in security, trade, and cultural exchange. He emphasized that the inclusion of new members, especially friendly nations like Armenia, enhances the organization’s appeal and global influence.

Sobhani stressed the need to protect the sovereignty of each country and to ensure regional stability. According to him, no nation should feel threatened, and peaceful development should be a shared goal.
The Iranian diplomat highlighted the importance of multilateral collaboration, describing it as a necessity in today’s interconnected world. He praised the SCO for providing a platform where diverse cultures, languages, and traditions can unite for mutual benefit.
“The Shanghai Cooperation Organization spirit is rooted in regionalism, transportation, technology, security, culture, and people-to-people connections,” Sobhani explained. He added that by adhering to these principles, member states can transform their diversity into strength.
With strong endorsements from both China and Iran, Armenia’s role in the SCO is set to expand. As the organization continues to grow in influence, Armenia’s participation could open new avenues for economic partnerships, security collaboration, and diplomatic engagement in the region.
