Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Samvel Terteryan won the U20 world championship Monday, defeating Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nematov in the 77-kilogram final.
The wrestlers finished tied 1-1, but Terteryan took the gold medal on criteria because he scored the first point of the bout.
It was Terteryan’s second victory over Nematov in a major final this year. The Armenian also beat his Azerbaijani rival 4-0 in the U20 European Championship final.
The victory gives Terteryan the world title a year after his brother, Gaspar Terteryan, reached the same milestone. Gaspar won the U20 world championship in 2025, making the brothers world champions in consecutive years.
