Armenia Wins Its First Medal at the Karate World Championships

Armenia has achieved a new milestone by winning its first-ever medal at the Karate World Championships. The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports announced the news on its official Facebook page.

At the 27th World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, 21-year-old Suren Harutyunyan earned a bronze medal in the 75 kg category. He won the medal match by defeating U.S. competitor Scott Thomas with a score of 2–0.

This result is significant because Armenia had never won a medal at the Karate World Championships before. Karate became organized in Armenia in the late 1980s, when the national federation was formed. Armenia joined the World Karate Federation in 1993, allowing its athletes to take part in official world and European competitions. For decades, Armenian athletes competed internationally without reaching the podium at the senior world level.

Harutyunyan’s victory is the first breakthrough for Armenian karate on the global stage. The medal shows the steady development of the sport in the country and is seen as a major step forward for both the athlete and the national program.
