Armenian architect Sargis Sargsyan, a member of the well-known Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), has helped secure a major international victory by co-leading the winning design for the new Hamburg State Opera in Germany. The project stood out in a competitive global field due to its modern vision, bold design language, and innovative approach to architecture.
Sargsyan’s success in one of the world’s most respected architectural competitions highlights the growing presence of Armenian talent on the global stage. While contributing to major international projects, he is also actively involved in architectural development in Armenia.
In partnership with the Proforma architectural bureau, Sargsyan co-authored the concept for the Mountain Village residential complex in Dilijan. The project is designed to blend modern and environmentally friendly technologies with the natural landscape and cultural heritage of the region. The plan incorporates high ecological standards, green solutions, and new architectural ideas that respect the local environment.

The initiative is backed by Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, founders of UWC Dilijan College, who have long supported projects that bring world-class expertise to Armenia. They aim to encourage modern development while preserving local identity.
Their school building in Dilijan has already received international attention, earning several global awards in architecture, construction, and infrastructure. Supporters of the Mountain Village project believe it will contribute to Dilijan’s growth and help strengthen its reputation as a developing cultural and educational hub.
“Sargis Sargsyan’s success once again demonstrates that within our ecosystem, quality, innovation, and respect for heritage remain at the forefront. The Mountain Village initiative was launched by Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend, who are also the founders of UWC Dilijan College. Bringing the best global technologies and expertise to Armenia has always been central to their mission. It is worth noting that the school’s building has earned Armenia international recognition, winning five major global awards in architecture, construction, and infrastructure. We are confident that Mountain Village will likewise play a significant role in enhancing Dilijan’s appeal,” said Gleb Groshenko, the project lead.
The Mountain Village complex is expected to become one of the key modern developments in the region, combining global architectural experience with Armenian cultural roots.
