Armenian Students Win Three Medals at the International Astronomy Olympiad in India

Armenian students won two silver medals and one bronze at the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Mumbai, India, from August 11 to 21.

The Armenian team included five students from the A. Shahinyan Specialized Physics and Mathematics School won two silver medals and one bronze medal. The students who represented Armenia were 12th graders Narek Galstyan, Emil Musheghyan, Gor Hasratyan, Vahe Mkrtchyan, and 11th grader Natali Margaryan. Each country could send up to five contestants to compete in the Olympiad. This year, 288 students from 60 countries participated.

Medal winners:

  • Silver: Emil Musheghyan, Gor Hasratyan

  • Bronze: Narek Galstyan

  • Honorable mentions: Vahe Mkrtchyan, Natali Margaryan

The competition had four rounds: a theoretical test, an observational test, a data analysis test, and a planetarium test. These rounds assessed students’ knowledge of astronomy and astrophysics, as well as their ability to work with data and solve practical problems.

The Armenian team was led by Hrant Topchyan from the Yerevan Physics Institute and Artashes Mkrtchyan from the A. Shahinyan Specialized School.

Last year, at the 17th IOAA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Armenian team won three bronze medals. This year’s results show an improvement, with two silver medals among the awards.

The IOAA is an important international event that brings together young students with a strong interest in astronomy and astrophysics. The competition is a platform for students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge while competing with peers from around the world.

Armenia’s success in this year’s Olympiad shows the country’s focus on science education and the growing talent of its students in fields like physics, mathematics, and astronomy.
