A group of Armenian weightlifters returned home to a warm welcome at Zvartnots International Airport after completing their competition at the European Junior and U23 Weightlifting Championships. Family members, supporters, and sports fans gathered at the airport to greet the athletes with traditional Armenian music, applause, and celebration.
Among the returning champions was Aleksandra Grigoryan, who achieved impressive results at the tournament. She expressed her satisfaction with her performance, saying that she managed to lift weights in both the snatch and clean and jerk categories better than she ever had in training. Her success also set a new record, marking a major achievement for Armenian weightlifting.
According to Samvel Gasparyan, General Secretary of the Armenian Weightlifting Federation, the team’s strong performance and multiple medals were expected. Before the championship, the federation had high hopes that Armenian athletes would bring home several medals — and those expectations were met. Gasparyan added that more members of the national team are still scheduled to compete in the coming days, and he expects more high results and victories.
He also announced that the military team will soon travel to Iran to take part in the first-ever international military weightlifting competition. Four Armenian athletes will participate in the event. Gasparyan emphasized that the main goal is to demonstrate that Armenia can become an active member in this new field of competition. He described the inclusion of weightlifting in military tournaments as a positive and important step for the sport.
