Football Drama: Armenian Team Captain Quits Over Clash With Newly Appointed Head Coach

Yeghishe Melikyan has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Armenian national football team. The decision was confirmed today by the Executive Committee of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA). Melikyan, 46, will lead the team under a contract valid until November 2026.

The FFA is making this change to take the national team in a new direction and help it grow. Melikyan is a well-known figure in Armenian football, having been a former national team player and a successful coach at the club level, winning two championships with Armenian clubs in recent years.

Melikyan said he is proud to take on the new role and understands the challenges and responsibilities it brings. He stressed his commitment to acting in the best interest of Armenian football and called for unity within the football community to support the national team.

In a separate statement, Varazdat Haroyan, the national team captain, announced his decision to end his career with the Armenian national team. Haroyan, who has played 92 matches for Armenia over 15 years, said he has always been dedicated to the team.

However, he mentioned a personal conflict with the newly appointed coach, Melikyan, saying, “I tried once to work with our newly appointed coach — it didn’t work out. I don’t want to try a second time, because it won’t work out either.”

Haroyan thanked the fans and said he will always support the team in his heart, even though he is retiring.

Armen Melikbekyan, President of the Football Federation of Armenia, said this decision is a fresh start for the national team. He spoke highly of Melikyan’s strong understanding of Armenian football and hopes that by working closely together, the coach and federation staff can bring success through hard work and teamwork.

The Armenian Report spoke with Gevorg Malakyan, a sports journalist, who shared his thoughts on the appointment. He said that many have long hoped for a local coach to lead the national team. Melikyan, with his experience and professional skills demonstrated at Pyunik Football Club, was seen as the best choice.

Malakyan added that Melikyan prefers an aggressive style of football focused on ball control and constructive play. He acknowledged the unusual nature of the FFA’s decision given the past conflict between Melikyan and the federation, but considered the move positive.

The first match under Melikyan’s leadership will be against Portugal. Malakyan told fans not to expect immediate results, mentioning the strength of the opponent and the need for Melikyan to adapt to the team. Still, he said supporters should be patient and hopeful for progress.

Regarding Haroyan’s retirement, Malakyan said it is a natural part of football for leaders to move on, and while Haroyan’s absence will be felt, other defenders have the potential to improve and support the team. He also found the captain’s public comments about the conflict with Melikyan unnecessary.

The Armenian national football team is starting a new chapter with Melikyan in charge, looking to grow from past lessons and move forward with a fresh focus and unity.
