Henrikh Mkhitaryan Says "The Door is Closed" on Returning to the Armenian National Team
Former captain of the Armenian national football team, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, recently gave an interview to Artak Aleksanyan at the Newmag / Summerfest-2024 festival. During this conversation, Mkhitaryan opened up about several significant topics, including the conclusion of his international career and his personal life.
Mkhitaryan was candid about the prospects of returning to the Armenian national team, emphasizing that every journey has its beginning and its end. He shared his philosophy on timing, suggesting it’s better to conclude a chapter too soon rather than too late.
“It is better to end one step early than two steps late. It's better if you make this decision yourself rather than someone else. I can say that I do not regret any decisions I made, both in my football career and beyond. I am satisfied with my decisions and the path I have taken. Some people might say I could have had a better or worse career, but I believe none of us can escape our fate. We must accept what we have and be thankful to God for everything He has given us. Unfortunately, the door to the national team is closed for me,” said Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan concluded his tenure with the Armenian national team in November 2021, having played a total of 95 matches and scoring 32 goals.
The 35-year-old footballer also spoke for the first time about the birth of his second child. In 2023, Mkhitaryan’s daughter, Lilia, was born in Milan. She was named after Henrikh’s maternal grandmother, adding a personal and sentimental touch to the name.
“With the birth of the second child, many things changed. Life gains new meaning with children. You start living for them, doing everything to ensure they, and therefore you, feel good,” Mkhitaryan reflected.
He admitted that he now spends a significant amount of time with his children, cherishing the process of upbringing, daily learning, and repetition. Mkhitaryan described raising a child as a real art, one that he finds joy in mastering.
Speaking about his son Hamlet, Mkhitaryan noted that the young boy has a deep passion for football. While Hamlet loves the sport, Mkhitaryan believes it is essential for his son to carve out his own path, albeit with his father’s guidance and support.
After the interview, Mkhitaryan engaged with his fans, signing autographs and taking photos. His interaction with supporters highlighted his continued influence and popularity.
