Gor Sahakyan Wins Silver at the European Weightlifting Championships

Armenia’s national weightlifting team has earned another medal at the European Weightlifting Championships held in Chișinău, the capital of Moldova. Gor Sahakyan, a two-time European champion and world bronze medalist, claimed the silver medal in the men's 73 kg category with a total of 338 kg (153 kg snatch + 185 kg clean and jerk).
In the snatch portion of the competition, Sahakyan successfully lifted 150 kg and then 153 kg on his second attempt. His third attempt at 156 kg was unsuccessful. During the clean and jerk, he lifted 181 kg and 185 kg in his first two attempts but failed to lift 189 kg on his final attempt. His performance in this event also earned him a small bronze medal in the clean and jerk.
Gor Sahakyan has consistently showcased his talent on the international stage. He first rose to prominence by winning the European Youth Championship in 2018, followed by the U20 European Championship titles in 2021 and 2022. He also earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Junior Championships.
Sahakyan made his debut in senior competitions in April 2023 at the European Championships in Yerevan, winning gold in the 67 kg category with a total of 370 kg (145+175). Later that year, at the World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he secured a bronze medal with a 312 kg total (142+170). In 2024, he became a two-time European champion after winning gold in Sofia, Bulgaria, in the 67 kg category with 311 kg (140+171). That same year, he also won gold at the U23 European Championships in Poland with a 320 kg total (140+180).
Most recently, Sahakyan competed in the 2024 World Championships in Bahrain in the 73 kg category, finishing 8th with a 331 kg total (146+185).
Armenia’s success at the European Championships didn’t end with Sahakyan. Alexandra Grigoryan, who was named the Best Young European Weightlifter of 2024, claimed a silver medal with a total of 202 kg (85+117). Garnik Cholakyan also brought home bronze with a 275 kg total (124+151).
