Henrikh Mkhitaryan, one of Armenia’s most celebrated athletes, has announced that he will retire from professional football after his time with Inter Milan comes to an end.
In a recent interview with La Repubblica, the Armenian midfielder said he still has one year left on his contract with the Italian club. While he is not setting a specific date for his retirement, Mkhitaryan made it clear that he has no plans to continue playing after his Inter Milan contract ends.
“I don’t know how much longer I’ll play,” he said. “I’m not ruling anything out, but I know I still want to be on the field.”
He added, “I have one year left on my contract with Inter. If they don’t kick me out, I’m staying. I don’t want to retire with the regret of having done it too soon. After Inter, I’m done. Moreover, I don’t want to lower the level.”
Mkhitaryan also spoke about where he won’t be playing. “I won’t go back to playing in Armenia. And destinations like Saudi Arabia don’t interest me. With all due respect, I love football for the game, not for money. When I wake up, I want to train and show what I’m worth.”
Looking ahead, Mkhitaryan said he is unsure what the future holds after retirement. “After football? Today I say I’d like to leave the football world, but never say never. I’ll need time to reflect and rest, with my family.”
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s career has been a source of pride for the Armenian people. From Yerevan to Europe’s top leagues, his success has brought international recognition to Armenia through sport. As he prepares to close this chapter, fans across the world — and especially in Armenia — will be watching closely and cheering for his final season.
