Malkhas Amoyan has been officially named the best Greco-Roman wrestler in Europe for 2025 during the European wrestling congress held in Tirana, the capital of Albania, according to the Wrestling Federation of Armenia.
The recognition is another major honor to Amoyan’s growing career. The Armenian wrestler is already a bronze medalist from the Paris Olympic Games, a two-time world champion, and a four-time European champion. Now, ahead of another major tournament, he has received one more important distinction on the continental stage.
During the same congress, Armenia also received recognition in coaching. Armen Babalyan, the head coach of Armenia’s national Greco-Roman wrestling team, was named the best coach of the year. The award comes as Armenia prepares to begin its latest campaign at the European Wrestling Championships in Tirana.
The championship starts on April 20, with the Greco-Roman competition opening the tournament. Babalyan’s team has already arrived at the venue and is ready to begin competition.
Armenia will be represented in the Greco-Roman division by Manvel Khachatryan at 55 kilograms, Suren Aghajanyan at 60 kilograms, Karen Aslanyan at 63 kilograms, Slavik Galstyan at 67 kilograms, Gaspar Terteryan at 72 kilograms, Samvel Grigoryan at 77 kilograms, Malkhas Amoyan at 82 kilograms, Gevorg Tadevosyan at 87 kilograms, Hayk Khloyan at 97 kilograms, and Albert Vardanyan at 130 kilograms.
Amoyan will enter the championship in Tirana with a chance to win his fifth European title, a result that would further strengthen his place among the top Greco-Roman wrestlers in Europe. His award as Europe’s best Greco-Roman wrestler for 2025 comes just before he begins that latest title push, putting even more attention on his performance in Albania.
The Armenian team will also feature a new face in senior competition. Hayk Khloyan, the world under-23 champion, will test himself for the first time at the senior level. He steps into the lineup in place of seven-time European champion Artur Aleksanyan, one of the most decorated wrestlers in Armenian and European wrestling history.
The honors handed to both Amoyan and Babalyan before the start of the championship show the strong position Armenia continues to hold in Greco-Roman wrestling. With one of Europe’s most successful wrestlers leading the lineup and the continent’s top coach guiding the squad, Armenia heads into the tournament in Tirana with high expectations.
