Turkey and Azerbaijan are conducting another series of major joint military exercises in Nakhijevan. These drills, named “Indestructible Brotherhood-2025” and “Mustafa Kemal Atatürk-2025,” involve mechanized infantry, commandos, tanks, artillery, air defense units, and air force support. The exercises, which will be held from June 12 to June 19, demonstrate the strong military partnership between Ankara and Baku.
The military cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan is not new. Joint military exercises between both countries have been organized for years. During the 2020 war against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), Turkey played a crucial role in helping Azerbaijan occupy parts of Artsakh. Ankara provided advanced military technology, including Bayraktar TB2 drones.
In addition to drones, Turkish military advisers worked alongside Azerbaijani commanders, offering strategic planning and battlefield support. Reports also suggested that Turkey helped bring foreign fighters to the conflict, though both countries denied these claims. Furthermore, Turkey shared important intelligence and satellite information, enabling more effective Azerbaijani strikes.
Politically, Turkey strongly supported Azerbaijan during the war. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other officials openly backed Azerbaijan’s war against Artsakh, framing the invasion as just and necessary. Turkish media and diplomats pushed this narrative in international forums, solidifying Ankara as Baku’s closest ally.
Turkey’s historic hostility toward Armenia and its open support of Azerbaijan heightens tensions in the region. The exercises demonstrate Turkey’s growing influence in the South Caucasus and its determination to back Azerbaijan militarily. These drills send a clear message about the military readiness and alliance of Ankara and Baku.
For Armenia and its diaspora, these joint military exercises reveal that both countries are getting ready for another possible attack on Armenia. Turkey’s deep support for Azerbaijan threatens Armenia’s safety and peace in the region.
It is crucial that the international community acknowledges the risks to Armenia and supports genuine efforts toward lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
