Pashinyan, Aliyev Hold Anniversary Call, Discuss Peace Process, TRIPP and Armenia-Azerbaijan Trade One Year After Washington Summit

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spoke by phone Saturday, one year after a U.S.-backed summit in Washington.

The Aug. 8 call focused on the progress Armenia and Azerbaijan have made since the 2025 Washington summit, as well as expanding economic ties and plans for a new regional transit route, according to the Armenian government.

Pashinyan and Aliyev met in Washington on Aug. 8, 2025, with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump. During the summit, the two countries initialed the text of a peace agreement. The Armenian government said Saturday that the Washington meeting established peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

During their anniversary call, Pashinyan and Aliyev spoke about the role played by Trump and his administration in advancing the peace process and reviewed developments in Armenian-Azerbaijani relations over the past year.

The leaders also discussed trade and transportation, pointing to new economic links as practical results of the normalization process.

Among those developments are exports of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia and cargo shipments traveling through Azerbaijan to Armenia, as well as transit shipments originating in Armenia and moving through Azerbaijan to other destinations, according to the government.

Pashinyan and Aliyev also discussed implementation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP, under agreements reached in Washington.

The proposed route is part of a broader effort to open transportation links in the South Caucasus and improve regional connectivity.

The Armenian government said both leaders agreed that efforts should continue toward lasting peace and stability while expanding transportation links and economic cooperation across the region.
