A train carrying more than a thousand tons of Russian grain passed through Azerbaijan on its way to Armenia early Tuesday, Azerbaijani APA news agency reported. The Armenian Report contacted the Prime Minister’s Office to verify the information. The Prime Minister’s Office informed us that an official response would be provided once the cargo reaches Armenia, as it must also pass through Georgian territory.
According to Azerbaijani sources, the train departed Russia at 00:15 local time after customs clearance and included 15 wagons carrying 1,048 tons and 800 kilograms of grain bound for Armenia’s Dalarik railway station.
Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan had allowed grain shipments to pass through its territory toward Armenia. Baku presented the move as a sign of goodwill, but it appears designed to serve a political purpose — to project Azerbaijan as the main regional power controlling trade routes between its neighbors.
Aliyev’s statement that Azerbaijan “permitted” the grain transit shows his ongoing efforts to portray Armenia as dependent on Baku’s approval for access to vital goods. This narrative fits into Azerbaijan’s broader strategy of dominance, using economic and logistical routes as tools of political pressure.
During his speech at the Orbeli Forum in Yerevan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took a cautious but firm approach in responding to Aliyev’s rhetoric. Referring to the need for historical accuracy, he noted that history cannot be rewritten to justify political claims — a clear message that Armenia will not accept Azerbaijan’s manipulative narratives or pressure tactics.
