Armenian judoka Vahe Aghasyan became the European U23 Champion in the 60 kg weight category — a historic victory for Armenia at the tournament held in Chișinău, Moldova.
Throughout the competition, Aghasyan showed strength, discipline, and determination, defeating opponents from Bulgaria, Spain, Moldova, Belgium, and in the final — Georgia’s Mate Gogoberishvili — to claim the gold medal.
This triumph is only the second U23 European gold medal in Armenia’s judo history. The last time an Armenian judoka won this title was 22 years ago, in 2003, when Armen Nazaryan stood on top of the podium.
Aghasyan’s success also ends a long wait for Armenia’s next major judo championship title. The last gold medal in any European judo tournament came in 2019, when Ferdinand Karapetyan won the senior European Championships.
