Yerevan Unveils Monument Honoring Legendary Armenian Actor Mher Mkrtchyan

A bronze monument honoring Mher Mkrtchyan, one of Armenia's most beloved actors, was unveiled in central Yerevan on October 10 as the capital celebrated its 2,808th anniversary.
The statue stands in Shahumyan Park, near Vazgen Sargsyan Street. It was created by Armenian sculptor Tigran Arzumanyan, with architectural design by Ashot Aleksanyan.
Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan attended the unveiling ceremony, held as part of the city's annual Erebuni-Yerevan celebrations. He spoke about Mkrtchyan's lasting influence on Armenian culture, saying his film characters and memorable lines remain familiar even to younger generations.
Born in Gyumri in 1930, Mkrtchyan, widely known as Frunzik, became one of the most recognizable faces of Armenian and Soviet cinema. His performances combined humor with emotional depth, earning him admiration across generations.
He appeared in some of the most celebrated films of the Soviet era, including Mimino, The Caucasian Prisoner, We Are Our Mountains and The Tango of Our Childhood. His work earned him the title of People's Artist of the Soviet Union.
Mkrtchyan died in 1993 at age 63, but his films remain widely watched, and many of his characters' lines have become part of everyday Armenian conversation.
The new monument places his likeness in the heart of Yerevan, honoring an actor whose legacy remains an enduring part of Armenian cultural identity.
