Areg, Armenian Boy Who Met Cristiano Ronaldo in Yerevan, Dies After Cancer Battle

Areg, an Armenian child battling cancer, is being remembered across the country months after he met his football hero Cristiano Ronaldo during the star’s visit to Yerevan. His story gained wide attention when Ronaldo took time to meet him on September 6, creating one of the most emotional moments of the Portuguese captain’s trip.

Areg’s passing was confirmed by Armen Martirosyan, the Founding Director of the Children’s Health Foundation of Armenia (HFC Armenia). Martirosyan shared a heartfelt message about Areg on his Facebook page, writing: “My Areg has left us. I want to remember you just like this — enjoying life under rock and roll… For more than eight years we walked this road together, and you also taught me how to love life even when everything is very difficult. You were one of the brightest and wisest miracles I have ever known. I am happy that we managed to make your dreams come true, we even reached Ronaldo… we only didn’t manage to meet Jackie Chan, brother, forgive me for that. Now you can dance in the universe, my little brother, you have found your peace. You won in life because you lived fully happy.”

Months earlier, when Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Armenia for the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifier between Portugal and Armenia, one of the most meaningful moments of his visit happened away from the stadium. Areg, who had long dreamed of meeting the football legend, was given the chance to greet Ronaldo in person.

A video shared at the time showed Ronaldo smiling, talking to Areg, and giving him an autograph. For the young fan, the meeting represented the fulfillment of his biggest dream. Martirosyan later said it was an unforgettable and deeply emotional encounter for everyone present.

Ronaldo was in Yerevan for the qualifier match at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, which kicked off at 8 PM local time. But for many Armenians, the visit was defined not only by football — it was defined by the compassion he showed to a child fighting for his life.

Areg’s story spread quickly across social media, with many praising Ronaldo for making time for him during a busy international schedule. The moment became a symbol of kindness and humanity.
