Armenia Introduces Voluntary System of Mandatory Military Service for Female Citizens

The National Assembly of Armenia has taken a significant step towards gender equality and national defense by adopting a legislative initiative in the first reading. The initiative, submitted by the Government, aims to introduce a system of mandatory military service for female citizens on a voluntary basis.
During the National Assembly session, the package of bills proposing additions and amendments to the Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Military Service and the Status of Servicemen" and the Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Defense" received overwhelming support with 62 votes in favor and 26 abstentions.
The introduction of the voluntary system of mandatory military service will provide an opportunity for Armenian female citizens aged 18 to 27 to actively contribute to their country's defense efforts. Under this new system, eligible women will have the option to submit an application for a mandatory military service period of 6 months.
Defense Minister Suren Papikyan addressed the National Assembly, expressing the importance of this legislative change and its potential benefits for national security. He stated, "A system of mandatory military service for female citizens on a voluntary basis is introduced. Armenian female citizens aged 18-27, whose mandatory military service period is 6 months, can submit an application."
This move aligns with the current Government’s commitment to fostering gender equality and empowering women to play a more active role in national defense. By providing women with the option to participate voluntarily in military service, the country seeks to build a stronger and more inclusive defense force.
