Iranian Ambassador Warns Azerbaijan Against Provocation in Syunik, Confirms No Armenian Casualties Despite Israeli Strikes

Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, stated that Iran will not accept any attempts by Azerbaijan to exploit the current conflict to attack Syunik, the Armenian province that borders Iran. He stressed that Tehran has “very clear red lines” and will not deviate from them.

“We follow developments closely and stay in close contact with Armenia and neighboring countries,” Sobhani said. “The behavior of countries now will affect our future relations. Friends and enemies become clear during difficult times.”

Regarding the Armenian community in Iran, the ambassador confirmed no casualties or injuries have been reported due to the conflict. He also reassured that no radiation leaks have occurred from attacks on nuclear facilities, pointing out that Iran’s Natanz nuclear plant is located far from Armenian territory.

Sobhani also addressed worries about foreign involvement in the recent attacks on Iran.

“We do not have evidence that certain countries could have participated in these actions. But we will conduct a study. And if we come to the conclusion that certain countries have assisted the Zionist regime [i.e., Israel] in these actions, this will affect the relations between Iran and these countries,” the ambassador stated.

With Iranian airspace closed due to Israeli strikes, many flights between Iran and Armenia have been canceled or delayed. To help Iranians stranded in Armenia, Iran has been using Armenian buses to transport them back home. “Yesterday, about 30 Iranian cultural figures who had arrived from Moscow were transported to Iran by Armenian buses,” Sobhani said.

Around 600 trucks continue to cross the Armenia-Iran border daily, keeping vital trade moving despite the challenges.

The ambassador’s statements reinforce Iran’s commitment to protecting Armenia’s territorial integrity, particularly Syunik, and underline the close cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan during this tense period.
