Armenia to Receive €5 Million from EU for Nuclear Safety and Defense Projects

Armenia will receive €5 million ($5.8 million) in financial support for improving nuclear safety and strengthening defense systems in the country. The funding was announced by Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The funds will come through a new agreement between the Armenian government and the European Commission, which focuses on enhancing nuclear safety and radiation protection measures. Khudatyan said this new program continues the cooperation established in 2024, when Armenia received €12.9 million ($14.9) under a similar agreement. That funding helped improve the country’s ability to manage hydrogen-related accidents and reduce related risks.

According to the minister, part of the earlier funds was used to purchase diesel generators to ensure the nuclear power plant’s emergency power supply in case of an accident. The newly approved €5 million will focus specifically on measures related to hydrogen management and safety.

“The €5 million agreement concerns responding to hydrogen produced in case of an accident, as such,” Khudatyan said.

A portion of the money will be used to acquire specialized equipment that helps burn hydrogen in emergency situations. This equipment will be provided to Armenia’s nuclear power plant to prevent the buildup of hydrogen during potential accidents.

The remaining part of the funding will support the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee of Armenia. Together with European experts, the committee will work on analyzing and updating key safety and risk management documents to ensure Armenia’s nuclear infrastructure meets the highest international standards.
