Garnik Cholakyan Takes Silver for Armenia After One-Kilogram Battle for Gold

Armenian weightlifter Garnik Cholakyan won a silver medal at the European Weightlifting Championships held in Batumi.


Competing in the 60 kilogram weight category, Cholakyan recorded a total of 274 kilograms in the combined event. He lifted 124 kilograms in the snatch and followed with 150 kilograms in the clean and jerk. His result placed him in second position, just one kilogram behind Bulgaria’s Angel Rusev, who secured the gold medal with a total of 275 kilograms, including lifts of 120 kilograms in the snatch and 155 kilograms in the clean and jerk.

The one-kilogram gap reflected the intensity of the competition, with both athletes maintaining high-level performances across both disciplines. Cholakyan remained consistent throughout the event and stayed within reach of the top position until the final lifts, ultimately finishing with the silver medal.


The European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi have brought together leading athletes from across the continent, with national teams competing for medals in multiple weight categories.
