Levon Aronian Wins Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final After Beating Magnus Carlsen

Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian has won the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final held in Cape Town, South Africa. Aronian secured the title after defeating Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the 16th world champion and the top-ranked chess player, in the final match with a score of “1,5:0,5”.

This event brought together top international players competing in a format that allows greater creative freedom on the board. Aronian’s victory is another major achievement in his career and shows his strong performance in the freestyle format.


To reach the final, Aronian had a solid path through the knockout stage. In the quarterfinals, he won “3:1” against American player Hans Niemann. He continued his strong play in the semifinals, defeating German grandmaster Vincent Keymer with another “3:1” result.

Magnus Carlsen also advanced through tough opponents. He beat American Fabiano Caruana “3:1” in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he earned a “2,5:1,5” victory against Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov.


The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final had a total prize fund of $750,000, making it one of the most significant chess events of the year.
