Pakistan Says Ties With Armenia Depend on Azerbaijan and Turkey

Pakistan’s Senate Speaker Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that his country’s relations with Armenia depend on how Azerbaijan and Turkey’s relations with Armenia develop.

Speaking to APA, Gilani explained that Pakistan is working closely with Azerbaijan and Turkey and that its position toward Armenia will follow theirs. “We [i.e. Pakistan] are cooperating with Azerbaijan and Türkiye, and both countries have agreed to establish good relations with Armenia. Our relations with Armenia depend on Azerbaijan and Türkiye’s relations with Armenia. Currently, no relations have been established between the parliaments of Armenia and Pakistan. However, after the peace talks are concluded, we will consider this,” said the speaker of the Pakistani senate.

This was said shortly after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, in September 2025, where Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev both attended. Delegations from the two countries expressed interest in joining the SCO, but reports suggested their applications faced obstacles. According to insiders, India vetoed Azerbaijan’s bid, while Belarus and Pakistan opposed Armenia’s application.

The developments at the summit followed a major diplomatic step between Armenia and Pakistan. For the first time in more than 30 years, the two countries established official diplomatic relations. The decision was announced by their foreign ministers in Tianjin, ending decades of Pakistan’s refusal to recognize Armenia’s independence in support of Azerbaijan. The move came just weeks after Armenia and Azerbaijan signed agreements on August 8 aimed at normalizing relations.
