Photos Reveal Proximity of Azerbaijani Presence to Armenian Homes in Kirants Village of Tavush

Azerbaijani Presence to Armenian Homes in Kirants

On Monday, July 15, residents of Kirants village in Armenia’s Tavush Province, where border delimitation and demarcation are taking place between the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan, spotted a group of Azerbaijanis just outside their homes, as seen in photos shared exclusively with The Armenian Report.

The residents have been urging the Armenian government to stop the land concessions to Azerbaijan due to the serious security issues that the villagers will face having Azerbaijanis so close.

Archbishop Bagrat Galstayan began his ‘Tavush for the Homeland’ movement in the village of Kirants to stop the Armenian government from surrendering more Armenian sovereign territories to Azerbaijan. Despite ongoing protests by villagers and movement supporters, the Armenian government proceeded with the border demarcation.

Photos show a wall being built. Also seen in the photos are houses belonging to Armenians now on the border, just a stone's throw from the wall.

Residents of Kirants village, who live so close to this wall, have many fears. Having witnessed the first and second Nagorno-Karabakh wars, Armenians say they are well aware of the crimes Azerbaijanis are willing to commit against Armenians. They know the extent of Azerbaijan’s hatred against Armenians. Villagers fear for their families' safety and future ability to farm and live securely on their homeland.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently visited the border to assess the wall being built. He seemed satisfied with the outcome so far. The Prime Minister also told locals to plant a tree if they do not feel safe seeing Azerbaijanis on the other side of the border. The Armenian government believes that to reach lasting peace with Azerbaijan, Armenia must proceed with border delimitation and demarcation.

Critics and opposition groups, however, strongly disagree with the government. They say this process will only worsen matters, giving Azerbaijan more reason to infiltrate sovereign Armenian territories, which will lead to more Armenians being killed, murdered, mutilated, and tortured by Azerbaijanis.
