What Do Armenian Youth Want from Their Leaders? Yerevan’s Young Voices Speak Out on International Youth Day
August 12 marks International Youth Day, a global occasion dedicated to the issues and challenges faced by young people. This year, as the world celebrates the potential and aspirations of youth, The Armenian Report took to the streets of Yerevan to ask young Armenians one fundamental question: "What kind of world do you wish your political leaders would leave behind for you?"
The responses were both heartfelt and revealing. A significant number of the young individuals interviewed by The Armenian Report expressed a strong desire for peace. They spoke passionately about the need for a world where conflict is a thing of the past, and where future generations can live without the shadow of war. This yearning for peace reflects a broader global trend among youth who are increasingly advocating for a world free from violence and conflict.
However, peace was not the only concern raised by Yerevan’s youth. Many voiced a deep-seated mistrust in their government’s ability to protect its people. This lack of faith in political leaders is not unique to Armenia, but in this context, it carries a particular weight.
The recent history of the region, including the ethnic cleansing in Artsakh (internationally known as Nagorno-Karaabakh), has left scars that are still healing. Some young people specifically pointed to the loss of Artsakh as a tragic consequence of government actions, or lack thereof. For these youths, the pain of losing their homeland is still raw, and it has deeply influenced their view of the government.
One young woman from Artsakh was especially mournful in her remarks, referring to the government as "traitors." Her words echo a sentiment of betrayal felt by many who have experienced the direct impact of political decisions on their lives and communities. This sense of betrayal is coupled with a determination to hold those in power accountable, a sentiment that was felt among many of the young people interviewed.
Despite these feelings of disillusionment and betrayal, there was a strong undercurrent of determination among Yerevan's youth. They expressed a resolute commitment to working hard to build a better future for Armenia—a future where all Armenians can live in peace and prosperity. This determination is a testament to the resilience of youth, who, even in the face of adversity, continue to believe in the possibility of a better tomorrow.
International Youth Day, established by the United Nations, is observed annually on August 12. Since its inception on August 12, 2000, the day has served as a platform to draw attention to various cultural and legal issues affecting young people worldwide. Over the years, the themes of International Youth Day have evolved to address pressing global challenges, ranging from mental health and civic engagement to eradicating poverty and fostering peace.
This year’s theme, "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," emphasizes the role of digital technology in shaping the future. It shows the importance of equipping young people with the skills necessary to navigate and influence the digital world. As the youth of Yerevan contemplate their future, this theme resonates with their desire to use technology as a tool for positive change, not just in Armenia, but globally.
Throughout the years, the themes of International Youth Day have reflected the evolving priorities and challenges faced by young people around the world. In 2014, the focus was on "Youth and Mental Health," followed by "Youth and Civic Engagement" in 2015. Each year, the theme highlights a different aspect of youth life, recognizing their contributions to preventing conflict, supporting inclusion, social justice, and sustaining peace.
In 2023, the theme "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World" emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability and the role of young people in achieving it. As we move into 2024, the focus on digital pathways shows the critical role of technology in shaping a sustainable future.
As we celebrate International Youth Day, it is crucial to listen to these voices, to acknowledge their concerns, and to support their efforts to create a world that aligns with their hopes and dreams. The future belongs to the youth, and their vision of a better world should guide the actions of today’s leaders.
