As violence continues between Iran and Israel, Armenia has become a key escape route for Russian citizens trying to leave Iran. The Russian embassy in Armenia announced that Russians can safely cross the Iran-Armenia border by land, using the Norduz/Agarak checkpoint in southern Armenia. This shows Armenia’s important role in helping civilians during times of crisis in the region.
The Russian embassy shared this information through an official statement, saying:
“We inform about additional options for Russian citizens to leave Iran for Armenia by land—through the Norduz/Agarak border checkpoint on the Iran-Armenia border.”
According to the embassy, the Iran-Armenia border remains open and fully accessible for Russian nationals. People with either a foreign or internal Russian passport can pass through without needing special permission or advance notice. This makes Armenia a quick and easy option for people fleeing uncertainty in Iran.

Armenia’s role in this situation is especially important because many other borders in the region are either closed or too dangerous due to the ongoing military actions between Iran and Israel. On June 13, Israel launched strikes on Iran, leading to direct retaliation. Since then, tensions have remained high and the security situation in Iran has become more unstable.
To make things easier, the Russian embassy also shared step-by-step information about how citizens can travel from Meghri, Armenia’s southernmost city near the border, to Yerevan, the capital. From Yerevan, Russians can make further arrangements to return to Russia.
By keeping its borders open and safe, Armenia is helping ensure that innocent people are not trapped in the middle of a growing regional conflict. The Armenian people and government continue to show that even a small country can play a big role in regional stability and humanitarian support.
Armenia’s geographic location, nestled between Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, puts it in a sensitive but strategic position. When war breaks out in neighboring countries, Armenia often becomes a vital bridge for those trying to escape danger.
This is not the first time Armenia has stepped up to help people in the region. Whether it is offering safe travel routes or helping during humanitarian emergencies, Armenia is often a reliable partner.
As members of the global Armenian community, we should be proud of the role Armenia is playing in this crisis. The country’s quiet but strong response—keeping borders open, providing safe passage, and maintaining stability.
